October 9 - 11, 2008 • Helsinki, Finland
Working locally and thinking globally has become a commonly used phrase in recent years, with the emphasis on global challenges. This conference will highlight the importance of our local response and how settlements and neighbourhood centers are strengthening the world through successful, progressive localized initiatives. Starting with the key note speaker’s address, entitled “A Geography of Hope,” and woven throughout the conference, we will be challenged to examine the impact of our work at the neighbourhood level and its contribution to a global society. How are we strengthening the well-being of youth, increasing civic engagement, sharing our unique settlement house best practices, and building social and environmental responsibilities?

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the historical and current challenges facing Finnish communities, as well as successful responses including the Nordic tradition of engaging people in enlightened dialogue and a spirit of cooperation. Several other IFS members will also showcase successful projects where neighbourhood centres and community members have united to improve local conditions and work for social justice. Built into each session will be the opportunity for questions, dialogue and shared learning.
The three day conference will include presentations, small group discussions, time for networking, sightseeing tours, cultural events and an opportunity to help the Finnish Federation celebrate 90 years of strong investment in their neighbourhoods!
